Bentota Beach

Around the beaches of Bentota in the southwest of Sri Lanka, the country actually resembles what beach vacationers are looking for - the tropical paradise: overhanging palm trees, fine sandy beaches and luxurious seclusion. The beach of Bentota stretches from the town of the same name to the north along the narrow peninsula of Paradise Island, which separates the Bentota Lagoon from the Indian Ocean and is lined with a dreamlike jungle and mangrove landscape.

Things to do in Bentota

In addition to beach vacationers, adventurous people also feel at home here. The following leisure activities can be done at Bentota:

  • Paddle and boat trips : Various paths can be explored most romantically by water, for example by kayak through the exotic river landscape of the calmly flowing Bentota-Ganga to the lagoon and the mangrove forests and to one of the Buddhist temples on Bentota Ganga (Wanawasa Rajamaha Viharaya, Galapatha Rajamaha Viharaya).
  • Kande Vihara Temple : Tuk Tuk excursion to the large Buddhist temple near Bentota Beach with walk-in Buddha statue.
  • Water sports : There are also a number of providers for windsurfing, water skiing, snorkelling and ping. Travel time: Diving season from mid-November to mid-April.
  • Turtle visit : Five of the world's eight sea turtles live around the peninsula: Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Olive Ridleys and Green Turtles. Hundreds of eggs are buried in the sand every year from several turtle hatcheries. The hatched baby turtles can then be admired in the seawater tanks of the hatcheries.
